When a diff checker helps

  • Reviewing edits someone made to your document or email draft when tracked changes weren't on.
  • Checking a contract or offer letter against the earlier version before signing.
  • Comparing config files or code from two environments to find the setting that differs.
  • Spotting copy-paste changes in lists, CSV exports or translations.

Reading the result

Red lines exist only in the original, green lines only in the changed text, and lines shown on both sides with highlights were edited, with the changed words marked. Turn on Show only changes to hide unchanged lines in long documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the comparison work?

It compares the texts line by line using Myers' diff algorithm, the same approach behind git diff, which finds the smallest set of added and removed lines. Lines that changed are paired up and compared word by word so you can see exactly which words differ.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The comparison runs in your browser, so you can safely compare contracts, configuration files or private drafts.

What do 'Ignore case' and 'Ignore extra spaces' do?

Ignore case treats 'Hello' and 'hello' as the same. Ignore extra spaces treats runs of spaces and tabs as a single space and ignores spaces at the start and end of a line, which is useful when indentation or formatting changed but the content didn't.

Can it compare code or JSON?

Yes. It works on any plain text, including source code, JSON, CSV and config files. For JSON, format both sides with the JSON Formatter first so that key order and indentation don't hide the real differences.

How large can the texts be?

Thousands of lines compare almost instantly. If two very large texts are almost completely different, the tool shows everything as changed rather than searching for a perfect match, to keep your browser responsive.
