Common words like "the" and "and" are ignored.

Common length limits

  • SEO title: about 50–60 characters shows in full in most search results.
  • Meta description: about 150–160 characters on desktop, less on mobile.
  • X (Twitter): 280 characters for standard accounts.
  • Instagram caption: up to 2,200 characters, but only the first line or two show before "more".
  • LinkedIn post: up to 3,000 characters, with roughly the first 200 visible before "see more".

Platforms change these limits from time to time, so treat them as guides.

Typical word counts

  • College or job application essays: often 250–650 words. Check the exact limit, as many portals cut off extra text.
  • Blog posts: there's no ideal length. Write until the question is fully answered, then stop.
  • Speeches: at about 140 words a minute, a 5-minute talk is roughly 700 words.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it count words in Hindi, Telugu or other Indian languages correctly?

Yes. Words are split using the browser's built-in language-aware segmenter rather than just spaces, and characters are counted the way you see them on screen. In up-to-date browsers a conjunct like 'क्ष' or an emoji with a skin tone counts as one character; older browsers may count conjuncts as two.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses about 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults in a large 2019 review of reading research. Speaking time uses about 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for talks and voice-overs.

Why does my character count differ from another tool?

Tools differ on what counts as a character. This one counts what you see (an emoji is one character), and shows totals both with and without spaces. Some platforms count emoji or links differently, so leave a little headroom near a limit.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

Your text is never uploaded. To avoid losing a draft, it's kept in this browser's local storage until you press Clear. Don't use it for sensitive text on a shared computer.

How long should a meta description be?

Google doesn't publish a fixed limit and shows varying lengths, but around 150–160 characters usually displays in full on desktop. Put the most important words first in case it's cut short.
